*Itch*

by Lisa Rosen on March 22, 2011

Random fact about me:  I’m paranoid about bedbugs.  It’s not that I have an insect phobia or anything; I’m just very susceptible to bug bites.  Bugs like me.  They bite, and I itch.

A couple of summers ago I got into some chiggers and thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown.  A couple of years before that I got bitten by a tick and wound up with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.  I’ve been known to get thirty or forty mosquito bites in ten minutes flat.  They welt up and itch badly enough to drive me to the Benadryl.  If there’s a blood-sucking bug in the vicinity, it will find me.

So yes, I’m a bit paranoid about bedbugs.  I don’t want to find out if the bites itch as badly as I’ve read they do.  I’ve read up on how to check for them in a hotel room, and how to minimize your chances of picking them up in your suitcase.  I’ve researched every hotel we’ve stayed in recently, digging around online to make sure they haven’t reported an infestation.

Lee thinks bedbugs are a media sensation.  He also thought that about shark attacks, several summers ago (remember that?  the year we kept hearing about the sharks?).

I don’t know.  I think I’m a little more worried about the bedbugs than the sharks.

Hi Lisa,

I’m paranoid too. When I got back from New York a few months ago, I took off all my close in the garage and threw them, along with my purse and as much luggage as I could fit, into our garage deep freezer. I’d read on the plane ride home that the low freezer temps kill them.

Good to know, Anna. Yet another reason I want a deep freeze . . .

Now I know where Brynn gets it! Bugs love her! All summer she will have giant welts on her legs and arms. 2 summers ago we went to the beach and brynn woke up one morning and had been eaten up by something—Emilia shared her bed and NO bites??? Bed bugs?? I wonder…

Catherine–I’d’ve suspected a spider, in those circumstances. Happens to me occasionally. Poor Brynn . . .
